After playing out a stalemate at Wanda Metropolitano against city rivals Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid turn their attention to the Champions League as the record-winners host Club Brugge in game-2 at Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid certainly have momentum now:

After a horror show in the French capital against PSG, Zinedine Zidane’s very future was questioned for the way his team was going about its business on the football pitch. So a response was needed. And that’s what the record Spanish and European champions have given to the whole worl0. A timely one indeed.

Since that 3-0 defeat in the Champions League, Madrid have gone three games without conceding a goal, winning two of them.

But the cherry on the cake is the first position they acquired, though it’s mostly down to the bad form of Barcelona. Still, it seems that Zidane’s team is finally finding its feet in the new season.

When it’s the Champions League and you are placed in a group that has the 13-time champions and the mighty Parisians, you have to deliver in home games, at least. That’s why Club Brugge must be scratching their head after they could manage only a 0-0 draw in their opening Champions League game at home against Galatasary.

Now a daunting trip to the Spanish capital awaits them for their second assignment in this competition.

Real Madrid Team News:

Real Madrid’s new summer signing Ferland Mendy suffered an injury to his abductor in his left leg after the 0-1 win over Sevilla last week and remains out at the moment.

Marco Asensio is also out at the moment as he continues to recover a serious injury. The 22-year-old ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) against Arsenal in the 2019 International Champions Cup match in the United States.

James Rodriguez out, Bale rested!

Zidane also committed two first-team players from his 19-man squad. James Rodriguez picked up a knock in the Madrid derby and will be missing the game through an injury, while Gareth Bale has been left out due to the rest purposes.

Injury boost!

Isco has been training with the first team for the last week or so following full recovery from a hamstring injury. The former Malaga playmaker has been named in the matchday squad.

Another player who has fully recovered from injury is fan-favorite Marcelo. The 31-year-old missed the last three games for Madrid with a neck injury. But the Brazilian star is available for selection after making the cut to the matchday squad.

Luke Modric is back fit as well and will be pushing for a start here alongside Casemiro and Tony Kroos in the midfield.

Expect Eden Hazard to start the game. Madrid’s latest Galactico has failed to recapture his Chelsea form so far this season. He definitely looks bulky, and nowhere near his fluid best.

Real Madrid squad:

  • Goalkeepers: Courtois, Areola, Altube
  • Defenders: Carvajal, Militao, Ramos, Varane, Nacho, Marcelo
  • Midfielders: Kroos, Modric, Casemiro, Valverde, Isco
  • Forwards: Hazard, Benzema, Lucas Vázquez, Jovic, Vinicius

Real Madrid Probable XI: Areola (GK), Marcelo, Ramos, Varane, Carvajal, Casemiro, Kroos, Modric, Hazard, Benzema, Vinicius Jr.

Club Brugge Team News:

Defensive midfielder Eder Balanta and defender Matej Mitrovic are both out injured and won’t be available for selection.

But Federico Ricca has managed to recover from an injury and is part of the squad. The 24-year-old who can play in a variety of positions missed the last game for Club Brugge due to a hamstring injury.

Club Brugge Probable XI (Very tentative): Mignolet (GK), Mata, Mitrovic, Deli, Eduard Sobol, Hans Vanaken, Mats Rits, Ruud Vormer, Krepin Diatta, Emmanuel Dennis, David Okereke

Likely to score:

  • For Real Madrid – Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale, Eden Hazard
  • For Club Brugge Krepin Diatta, Emmanuel Dennis, David Okereke
