Real Madrid bring the curtain down on their 2018-19 La Liga season as they host Real Betis at Santiago Bernabeu, in Madrid on Sunday evening.

The Los Blancos have had problems right from the start of the campaign. The degree of mess Madrid were in this season is evident from the fact that they went through two managerial changes, with Zinedine Zidane finally moving to Santiago Bernabeu on a three-year contract.

So for all the Madridistas, the end of the season couldn’t have come much earlier. Though Madrid are bound to end the season without a trophy, the promise of a major overhauling indicates towards a better future.

The opponents, Real Betis are 10th and will be finishing the season outside the top-seven, meaning no European football for them next season.

  • Captain Sergio Ramos missed the training session and remains a huge doubt for the game. If he doesn’t play, Raphael Varane and Nacho will be forming the partnership at the back.
  • Mariano Diaz is also suffering from a few niggling injuries and was absent from the training.
  • While Jesus Vallejo, who started the game against Real Sociedad last weekend, will be serving the first of his three-game ban following his straight red card dismissal in that match.

Possible ins or outs of this game:

  • Gareth Bale‘s agent blasted Zinedine Zidane after the former Tottenham Hotspur winger was overlooked for the second game in a row.
  • Madrid will be going through a final training session late on Saturday and only after that, Zidane will name his final matchday squad for this particular game.
  • Whether Bale is in the squad or not, Brahim Diaz and Marco Asensio are the most likely player expected to feature out wide on this match.
  • Dani Carvajal and Marcelo will be starting on their favoured positions, while Federico Valverde is expected to come in for the suspended Casemiro.
  • Zidane could also opt to leave Thibaut Courtois out from his playing 11, with Keylor Navas replacing him between the posts.

Probable XI: Navas (GK), Marcelo, Nacho, Varane, Carvajal, Modric, Valverde, Kroos, Asensio, Diaz, Benzema

  • Real Betis’ two-goal hero of the last match Joaquin will be serving a one-game ban after he received his second yellow card late in the game. The reason being he scored a 98th-minute winner and took his shirt off during the celebration.

Possible ins or outs of this game:

Players in the spotlight:

In a season where Real Madrid hogged the limelight for all the wrong reasons, Karim Benzema gave all the Madrid fans a reason to smile. The Frenchman has racked up an impressive 21 league goals this season, which is one-third of what Madrid managed this season in La Liga.

One interesting stat is that Benzema has scored 8 of Madrid’s last 14 goals in La Liga.

His overall stats for the season are as follows:

  • Appearance: 52 (35 in La Liga)
  • Minutes played: 3,476 (2,885 in La Liga)
  • Goals scored: 31 (21 in La Liga)
  • Assists: 8 (6 in La Liga)
  • Shots: 84
  • Shots on target: 46

From Betis, we suggest Giovani Lo Celso. He features in midfield, but the young Argentine has managed 9 goals this season, which is by far his most productive season. On Madrid’s wide pitch, he will surely have a lot of space and time as well to show his artistry on the ball.

  • Goals: 9
  • Assists: 4

Suggested combination:

Goalkeeper: Navas
Defenders: Feddal, Carvajal, Nacho
Midfielders: G L Celso, Firpo, Kroos, Kaptoum, Asensio
Forwards: Benzema (VC), Moron
