A product of the Sinhalese Sports Club, he has also played cricket in Canada, the Caribbean, and Bangladesh. His favorite cricketers are Sachin Tendulkar and Lasith Malinga.
He was first made captain in September 2019 in a T20I series against Pakistan. He created a bit of history as his side whitewashed the then World no.1 side in their own backyard. Since the retirement of Mahela Jayawardene, Sri Lanka has not found a set skipper. It will be interesting to see how Shanka leads the side against Shikhar Dhawan-led India.
Shanaka is an explosive middle-order batsman. He usually comes in to bat at no.6 or no.7. Due to this fact and his role in the side, he has been a little inconsistent. He has therefore been in and out of the side over the years. The 6-foot-tall player is also good with the ball in hand. He bowls right-arm medium-fast.
