Gurinder Sandhu Career

Gurinder Sandhu, a talented cricketer from New South Wales (NSW), had an impressive performance during the 2015-16 Matador BBQs One Day Cup campaign. In five matches, he showcased his bowling skills by grabbing nine wickets at an average of 13.55. His best figures in the tournament were 4-29, demonstrating his ability to make significant contributions to his team’s success.

Although Sandhu’s performance in the seven Shield matches of the same season was below his usual standards, there were instances where he bowled exceptionally well but didn’t have the luck on his side. Despite this challenging season, Sandhu’s determination and resilience were evident, and it was anticipated that he would bounce back stronger.

During Australia A team’s winter tour of India, Sandhu decided to explore his skills as an off-spinner. While he had previously only bowled off-spin for fun, usually at the end of net sessions, this experiment proved to be a success. Sandhu was able to unleash his ‘tweakers’ at different stages of the Shield competition, adding another dimension to his bowling repertoire.

Sandhu’s cricket journey began when he became a member of the NSW and Australian Under-19 teams. His outstanding performances earned him a NSW Rookie Contract for the 2012-13 season. Although he only played a few One Day and Sheffield Shield matches towards the end of that season, his exceptional performances led to him being awarded the prestigious Steve Waugh Medal as the NSW Blues Player of the Year.

In addition to his individual success, Sandhu has a highly talented younger brother named Harmon, who is an all-rounder. Harmon represented the NSW Metro team in the Under-19 National Championships held last summer. The Sandhu brothers also have the opportunity to play First Grade cricket together for Fairfield-Liverpool, showcasing their shared passion for the sport.

Sandhu had the honor of representing Australia twice in One Day Internationals (ODIs), with his debut match against India in January 2015. Although he has only played two ODIs so far, he has shown his potential by taking three wickets at an economy rate of 5.35.

His First-Class debut came on 7th March 2013 in a match between NSW and Victoria at Melbourne. Since then, Sandhu has played 45 First-Class matches, taking 117 wickets with an economy rate of 2.85. While his wicket tally might not be as high as some other players, his ability to contain runs and maintain a low economy rate is a valuable asset for his team.

Sandhu also made his T20 debut on 8th December 2012 in a match between Thunder and Sixers at Sydney. Over the course of his career, he has played 67 T20 matches, taking 68 wickets at an economy rate of 8.16. While T20 cricket presents different challenges, Sandhu has proven to be a valuable asset in this format as well.
