Maheesh Theekshana is a rising off-spinner from Sri Lanka, who has been picked by the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League 2022 auction. He was bought at a price of 70 lakhs.
He made his international debut for Sri Lanka on 7 September 2021, in an ODI against South Africa where he picked a wicket on his maiden delivery and finished with figures of 4/37. His T20I debut took place a few days later against South Africa on 10 September 2021. He was a part of the Sri Lankan squad for the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup, where he finished with 8 wickets in 7 matches at an average of 17.12 while maintaining an economy rate of 5.48 throughout.
Maheesh Theekshana proved to be of immense value for the Lanka Premier League franchise – Jaffna Kings – in the 2021-22 edition. The mystery spinner finished as the joint highest wicket-taker in the tournament, with 16 wickets in 10 matches at an economy of 6.87 and an average of 16.75, and 4/25 as the best bowling figure which he picked against the Colombo Stars. In First Class cricket, he has picked 8 wickets in 3 matches, with the best figures in an innings as 5/76. In 15 List A matches, he has picked 24 wickets while averaging a mere 18.66 and an economy rate of 3.65, including the best figure of 3/37.
Maheesh Theekshana was in great form in the Lanka Premier League 2021-22 and has varied skillsets up his sleeves – off-break, carrom ball and googly – that eventually got him an IPL contract with the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2022 auction for a price of 70 Lakhs.
