Bangladeshi top-order batsman Soumya Sarkar is a left-handed batsman, right-arm fast bowler. Hailing from a Bengali Hindu family, Soumya is a son of a Bengali teacher in a government school who followed his father’s footsteps in education to become a teacher as well. However, he later explored his talent as a cricketer and established himself as a key member of the Bangladesh squad. Soumya was a part of the 2010 and 2012 Under-19 World Cup teams. He came in limelight after after ‘mankading’ Australia’s Jimmy Peirson in the 2012 Under-19 World Cup. Like every Bangladeshi cricketer, he received his initial training from BKSP.
Soumya Sarkar is a terrific cricketer who gave a magnificent performance in the 2015 World Cup. He switched from left-handed batting to right-hander following his idols- Sourav Ganguly and Brian Lara.
He was named in the Rajshahi Kings team squad for the 2018–19 Bangladesh Premier League. He has made a successful journey in BPL with outstanding scores. Moreover, he did not feature in any Test and ODI when Zimbabwe toured Bangladesh in February-March 2020 due to his marriage. Soumya Sarkar got married to his long-time girlfriend Priyonti Debnath Puja on 27 February 2020.
