Indian cricket finds itself at a leadership crossroads as selectors prepare to decide on a successor to Suryakumar Yadav. The selectors are exploring options for the future, as they are in a mood to sack the T20 World Cup 2026 winning skipper owing to his pathetic form. Surya got all the backing in the world despite some lean returns with the bat, particularly during the 2026 T20 World Cup. However, it seems like the selectors have reached the saturation point with Surya and are considering names like Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, and Tilak Varma to lead Team India in T20Is. Each of these three players brings something very different to the table. Let’s break down why they are in contention and what makes them special.

At 31, Shreyas Iyer brings proven leadership experience. He is an IPL-winning skipper, as he led the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title in 2024. He is also the only IPL skipper to take three different franchises to the final. He took Delhi Capitals to their only final to date in 2020, won the title with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, and took the Punjab Kings to their second IPL final in 2025.
Shreyas is known for his calm demeanor and tactical acumen. His ability to marshal resources and maintain composure under pressure makes him a strong candidate. However, his absence from T20Is for nearly 30 months raises concerns about his reintegration into the current squad.
A steady hand: After dealing with injuries and sitting out of the team for a while, Shreyas has worked his way back. The selectors see him as a mature player who can guide the younger guys.
The 27‑year‑old wicketkeeper‑batter from Bihar offers dual utility. His aggressive left‑hand batting style aligns with India’s modern T20 approach, and his fearless intent could energize the team. Yet, inconsistency has been Ishan Kishan’s Achilles heel, with fluctuating performances undermining his case for long‑term leadership.
However, after a thoroughly impressive T20 World Cup 2026, Ishan has earned the right to be in contention for a leadership role in India’s T20I setup. He recently led the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026 in the first half of the tournament when regular skipper Pat Cummins was unavailable. He is a former India U19 skipper as well, who led the team to the final in the 2016 U19 World Cup. Ishan has leadership experience at all levels and could be looked at as one for the future.
High energy: He plays with a lot of passion and energy, which matches the aggressive style that head coach Gautam Gambhir likes.
At just 23, Tilak Varma represents India’s next generation. His composure under pressure and ability to adapt to different match situations have impressed selectors. Tilak’s youth gives him a long runway to grow into the role, but his limited captaincy exposure at the international level remains a risk.
Moreover, Tilak has often been criticized for his batting approach in the middle order. He isn’t a batter who hits the long ball from the very beginning; instead, he takes time to settle down before unleashing his array of strokes. Also, the left-hander has no fixed batting order and has shuffled to various positions in the eleven. Therefore, going for Tilak Varma as Team India’s next T20I leader could be a wild call.
India’s next T20I assignment is slated to take place in July when they tour England for 8 white-ball games, including 5 T20Is. With Suryakumar Yadav almost certain to lose his captaincy duties, he might also be dropped from the squad due to his poor form with the bat. Whether it’s Tilak, Ishan, or Shreyas, we are assured of getting a new face who will be leading the Indian T20I side in the future.
