It’s the marquee fixture in the Chinese Super League this weekend as 2nd placed Beijing Guoan prepare to host the leaders Guangzhou Evergrande in the league at Beijing Workers’ Sports Stadium.
The decision to sack Roger Schmidt as the head coach came out of the blue, but it also sets the precedent for the new manager Bruno Génésio that failing to match the lofty ambitions of the owners could well bring him in the hot water.
Beijing have made a good start under him, winning 2-0 against Hebei CFFC in his only match as the manager of this club. But Evergrande are a totally different beast, the biggest challenge for any team in the Chinese Super League.
If the 52-year-old masterminds a win against the visitors, though it was any way harsh to sack Schmidt, the decision to appoint him as the manager may look like a move in the right direction.
While Guangzhou Evergrande know that a win here at the home of their nearest challenger will give them all the advantages in the title race.
