Bangladesh scripted history on August 16 in Darwin, defeating Australia in their own backyard by a comprehensive margin of 9 wickets. In doing so, they registered their first-ever Test victory over Australia in Australia, remarkably only in their second attempt. Winning a Test is significant in itself, but the manner of winning was nothing short of extraordinary, as Bangladesh utterly annihilated Australia in their own backyard in the opening Test.

This emphatic win etched Bangladesh’s name into the history books. As skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto rightly remarked, it stands as the greatest victory in Bangladesh’s cricketing journey. As far as Cricket Australia is concerned, they are in turmoil. The hosts need to seek answers before heading into the second and final Test on August 22 in Mackay. However, prior to that, let’s look into three possible reasons for Australia’s downfall in Darwin.

Pat Cummins’ arrogance humbled for good

The Aussie skipper, Pat Cummins, ahead of winning the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final against India, said, ‘Nothing more satisfying than hearing a big crowd go silent.’ The reference was to the Indian crowd gearing up to show up at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad for the World Cup final. The arrogant Aussie captain must have felt the heat of his phrase now in his own backyard when Bangladesh did something similar in Darwin.

After that loss, Pat Cummins is now the only Aussie captain to have been beaten by a Bangladesh side in a Test match at home. Despite playing their full-strength squad that featured the ever-so-inconsistent Marnus Labuschagne, Pat Cummins gave a clear indication of his stubbornness to back the right-hander who last scored a ton across formats more than 3 years back. Decisions like these were destined to hamper the team’s performance, and this is what we witnessed at Darwin during the first Test.

What’s the limit of a long run for Marnus Labuschagne?

When Marnus Labuschagne broke into the scene back in 2019, he was considered the next big thing in Australia’s red-ball setup. For the first four years of his career, Marnus was scoring runs with pretty ease. The career Test average that once sat near 60 has dropped ridiculously down to 44.16. The reason is his extended century drought, now spanning 42 consecutive Test innings. Though he has managed 9 half-centuries in this period, he has struggled to convert starts into big match-winning scores.

This extended slump in form has been backed by Cricket Australia and the skipper Pat Cummins. But the question remains: how long will Marnus get an already extended run? Head coach Andre McDonald has already made a brief remark on the scores Marnus got in the previous game stating – “He has lacked runs. But it is 31. He’s disappointed of that missed opportunity. He needs some big runs.” The alarm bells might be ringing for Marnus after a poor display in Darwin, and if he doesn’t get dropped for the Mackay Test, Australia will surely make yet another blunder.

David Warner’s replacement at the top- ‘Error 404: Still Not Found’

One of the key areas this Australian team has struggled in the last 2 years or so is their fragile opening slot. Since David Warner retired from Test cricket in January 2024, Australia have used six different players as his replacement at the top of the order. Even the likes of Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne have sporadically opened for Australia, but they have to return to their respective positions after failing in the new role.

Besides Steven and Marnus, the likes of Sam Konstas, Nathan McSweeney, and the current duo of Travis Head and Jack Weatherald have been used as openers, but the question persists: no stability in the top order. The void David Warner has left at the top isn’t filling up any time soon, and the Australian management has a headache of all sorts to find a stable opening duo let alone the opening batter.
