Kohli, the latest to join the elite group of sportsmen

Indian national cricket team captain Virat Kohli has been honored with the Khel Ratna award which is India’s highest sporting honor. He became the third cricketer to win this honor after Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni.

The Indian captain has been sensational in international cricket since the last five years and is currently at the top of ICC batting rankings for Tests and ODIs. With more than nine thousand ODI runs and six thousand Test runs, Kohli is well ahead of peers and is hailed as the most complete batsmen of this era by several cricketers and analysts.

He is also captaining Team India in the ODI and Test formats and under him, India is ranked number one in ICC Test ratings.

Soon after the news broke out, fans congratulated the Indian captain on Twitter.

Royal Challengers Bangalore whom Kohli represents in the IPL wasn’t far behind in congratulating the Indian skipper.

Fans defend Kohli over the controversy 

However, it hasn’t been all chalk and cheese for the Indian batsman. After the news broke out several people questioned Kohli’s achievements and claimed that there are other deserving candidates for the award.

Some doubted the points system while some believed that cricketers were given an undue advantage over other sports.

But to Kohli’s relief, several fans came out to support him and considered the cricketer a worthy candidate for India’s highest sporting honor.
