While veteran seamer Peter Siddle will return home next summer after serving Tasmania for three years, Victorian spinner Jon Holland has been awarded no state contract for 2023/24, officially ending his 16-year professional career.

Cricket Victoria’s 2023/24 summer roster was announced on Wednesday morning, and Holland was notably absent from the 27-man roster.

For Australia between 2016 and 2018, the 35-year-old grabbed nine wickets in four Tests against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. As injury insurance for Ashton Agar, the left-handed tweaker entered Australia’s Test squad in Sri Lanka last year.

With three Sheffield Shield titles for Victoria and 244 wickets at an average of 32.11, Holland retires from first-class cricket. In seven first-class matches this past home summer, he took 12 wickets in the Sheffield Shield while allowing only 1.99 runs per over.

Aaron Finch, a former captain of the Australian white-ball team, did not play because he resigned from state and international cricket earlier this year, as per the guide from outplayed.

I’d want to express my gratitude to the players leaving our program for their dedication to Victorian cricket by saying, ” Head coach David Hussey of the state of Victoria’s men’s cricket team said in a statement, “In any contracting process, there are always difficult decisions, and I’d like to thank all the players who are departing our program for their commitment to Victorian cricket.”

Siddle, meantime, has signed a two-year contract with the state in which he made his first-class debut in 2005.

He retired from international cricket in 2019, turning 39 this year, and moved to Tasmania the next year. Throughout 20 first-class matches for the Tigers, he took 61 wickets in the Sheffield Shield at an average of 25.57.

It’s encouraging that a veteran player like Peter Siddle is returning to help out a promising young fast bowling unit. Hussey said, “He’ll be an excellent role model for all of them.

It’s great that Peter may wrap up his career in his native Victoria. He’s a dedicated Victorian. We have also extended contracts to some of the best players in Premier Cricket from the past few years, as well as upgraded four of our rookies from last year. We’re committed to steady progress, and seeing the younger team members making a difference in games is encouraging.
