With the series already under possession, Bangladesh have called-up left-hander Soumya Sarkar for the third and final ODI of the series. He wasn’t a preferred choice for the series after he had a lame show in the recently concluded Asia Cup where again he was a late inclusion in his side’s Asia Cup campaign.
BCB chief selector Minhajul Abedin told that they have included Sarkar to see how he fits into the ODI squad and cleared the clouds of him opening the innings. In a statement, he said, “There are still some places that are up for grabs in the ODI set-up and we are just trying to see how fits in there.” Minhajul said. “We are not considering him to open the innings instead we will be keen to see how he reacts at No. 3 or 7.”
With Fazle Mahmud already in the mix of things to bat at the number three position vacated by Shakib al Hassan, it is quite unlikely for Soumya to take fill the post of number 3. However, with his additional bowling skills, he might get a nod ahead of others at the number 7 position.
Meanwhile, Soumya Sarkar, his thrilled with his selection and expressed his gratitude to the selectors. He stated, “I am ready to bat anywhere if that suits the purpose of the team. It’s a fact that I did bat down the order in the recent past while I have enjoyed batting up the order. As far as my bowling is concerned, it is an area I am emphasizing a lot on.”
He is currently representing Khulna Divison in the National Cricket League which is the lone first-class tournament of Bangladesh and he has been in impelling form having scored three fifties and a century. His exploits with the ball is also praiseworthy as he has claimed a five-fer as well in the competition.
