Punjab Kings have been one of the most improved teams this season. The Shreyas Iyer-led side recently claimed the second spot on the points table after a convincing 4-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Ahead of the match during the toss, PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer shared massive news regarding the Aussie all-rounder Glenn Maxwell. The captain confirmed Glenn Maxwell’s finger injury and also hinted that the all-rounder won’t be available for the remainder of the season.

Shreyas Iyer- “It’s very unfortunate that he’s got a fractured finger”

At the toss, Shreyas Iyer quoted,

“It’s very unfortunate that he’s got a fractured finger. To be honest, we haven’t decided about the replacements yet so far but we are pretty strong in our team’s mindset and what we have outside of our playing XI. We’ve got a variety of players who can win you matches. So we’re going to stick to that as much as possible.”

When did Maxwell get injured?

Glenn Maxwell’s PBKS and Australian teammate Marcus Stoinis revealed when the former got injured. Stoinis spoke of the injury and reckoned that Maxwell got injured before their last rain-affected fixture against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. For the CSK game played last night, Maxwell was replaced in the eleven by young Indian all-rounder Suryansh Shedge.

Stoinis was quoted to JioHotstar regarding Maxwell’s injury. The Aussie said,

“Unfortunately, Maxi’s broken his finger. He broke it just before the last game at training. He didn’t think it was too bad, but it ended up getting pretty bad. He had scans and yeah, the results weren’t great. So unfortunately for Maxi, I think it’s likely he’s out for the tournament,”

Glenn Maxwell has had an underwhelming show this season

Injury is unfortunate, but Glenn Maxwell wasn’t anywhere near his best this season of the Tata IPL. The Aussie all-rounder managed only 48 runs in six innings this season, including 4 single-digit scores. In his last appearance against KKR, the all-rounder scored only 7 off 8 deliveries and was bowled by India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy.

Maxwell was bought by PBKS for INR 4.2 crores in the mega auctions held last year in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The all-rounder returned to the franchise where he enjoyed his best IPL season in 2014, wherein he amassed 552 runs from 16 games at a breathtaking strike rate of 187.75. However, it took him 7 long years to return in form in the marquee event, as in the 2021 edition playing for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Maxwell amassed 500 or more runs for the second time in his IPL career.

Leaving the 2014 and 2021 seasons, Maxwell was never ever a big threat for the opposition, as his irresponsible shot selection and over-aggressive approach always backfired in his game, and he failed to elevate himself among the IPL greats. Take a look at Maxwell’s IPL journey year by year.

What Next for Punjab Kings and Glenn Maxwell?

With or without Maxwell, the Punjab Kings have been doing really well this season and looking good enough to make it to the playoffs after the 2014 edition. Glenn Maxwell hasn’t played a massive role in Punjab’s success this season; therefore, the team won’t be feeling his absence much.

However, with Maxwell being their second overseas player to get injured and almost ruled out of the season after Kiwi pacer Lockie Ferguson, the team management, led by head coach Ricky Ponting, should look for a replacement for both their overseas players. Ricky Ponting has blamed PSL’s clash with IPL for limitations in selecting any other overseas player. Punter quoted,

“To be honest, there aren’t many top-notch substitutes currently available. We’re diligently scouting Indian players, with some prospects training with us recently. They may soon earn a contract with Punjab Kings.”

For now, the team may look to incorporate local talent while relying on their existing overseas players- Azmatullah Omarzai, Josh Inglis, Xavier Bartlett, Marco Jansen, Marcus Stoinis, and Aaron Hardie to compensate for Glenn Maxwell’s absence and make the most of their four available overseas slots in the eleven.
