Chennai Super Kings, the team with the most playoff appearances and the second-highest title wins in the league finished as the champions last year after an underwhelming 2020 IPL. They’ve retained their mastermind MS Dhoni, last season’s Orange Cap winner R Gaikwad, all-rounders R Jadeja and Moeen Ali. MS Dhoni and S Fleming will continue the captain-coach combo for the record 12th time in IPL.
While CSK have managed to buy back most of its players from last season there are still some new additions to the squad. Devon Conway, the New Zealand left-hand batter will open the innings alongside Gaikwad and their middle-order will comprise of Moeen Ali, R Uthappa, A Rayudu, and S Dube. R Jadeja and MS Dhoni will be playing the finisher’s role and their bowling attack comprises of D Bravo, A Milne, and D Chahar who will miss most of the tournament due to injury.

CSK bought a total of 21 players at the auction to complete the squad along with their four retained players. They were keen on bringing back the core which won them the title last year bidding for almost all their former players. Deepak Chahar was their costliest buy of IPL 2022 Auction at 14 crores and they bought back their experienced players in Rayudu, Bravo, and Uthappa. Unlike previous seasons, CSK showed keenness in investing for the future when they bid for D Brewis and some U-19 cricketers. They’ve managed to buy Rajvardhan Hangargekar, the promising U-19 fast bowler who is capable of clocking upwards of 140kph.
