Deepak Hooda Run Out: Punjab Kings are without their regular captain KL Rahul for the game against Delhi Capitals. PBKS released an official statement revealing Rahul has been hospitalised with acute appendicitis. But Mayank Agarwal regained his full fitness just in time and was assigned the captaincy role against Delhi Capitals. Rishabh Pant drew the first blood by winning the toss and asked Punjab to bat first.
Prabhsimran Singh opened the inning with stand-in captain Mayank Agarwal, while David Malan replaced Nicholas Pooran in PBKS Playing 11. Punjab lost both Prabhsimran Singh and Chris Gayle inside the powerplay, while Malan ate 26 balls for his 26-run inning.
Deepak Hooda was the fourth Punjab batsman to head back to the pavilion but in a very uncanny way.
How the incident happened:
Mayank hit the ball to the long-off and thinking the ball would cross Shimron Hetmyer, ran hard to take a single without looking at Hooda, who was watching the ball all along. But the West Indian stopped the ball with his brilliant diving effort and tossed the perfect ball at the bowler’s end where Axar Patel took the bails off, also throwing the ball towards the wicket-keeper’s end.
With Mayank and Hooda at the same end, both batsmen tried to get behind the crease. However, interestingly, both batsmen were out of the crease when Axar Patel took the bails off, Hooda was judged run-out on the basis of being out of the crease when Pant took the bails off at the wicket-keeper’s end. As mentioned above, KL Rahul was hospitalised with acute appendicitis following complaints of severe abdomen pain. He is set to undergo surgery and could miss the rest of the IPL 2021 as a result. Losing a batsman of that pedigree is a huge blow to any team, let alone Punjab Kings are have been inconsistent.
