Dhoni reaches new milestone

By Christopher Paul

The new record

Mahendra Singh Dhoni reached another achievement in his star-studded career in the match against Bangladesh on Friday’s Asia Cup final at the Dubai International Stadium. The dismissal of Mashrafe Mortaza by stumping was Dhoni’s 800th dismissal across all formats.

This put him in the third position on the list of most dismissals by a wicketkeeper. His precedents are South African keeper Mark Boucher, who tops the list with a whopping 998 dismissals to his name and is followed by Australian legend Adam Gilchrist, who has 905 dismissals.

The hits

Both of Dhoni’ stumpings came on Kuldeep Yadav’s balls. The first was when Yadav bowled a tricky one that Liton Das came forward to block. Dhoni wasted no time in blowing the bails off while Das was caught outside the crease.

The set batsman who could do explosive damage was successfully dismissed. With this, Dhoni beat Kumar Sangakkara to have the most stumpings in the Asia Cup. Though it was a tough decision, the TV umpire took several looks at it and finally decided.

The second stumping by Dhoni was affected when Kuldeep bowled a similar delivery to Mortaza. The googly he bowled pitched outside off. While Mortaza was swinging wildly, Dhoni dismissed him to make it his 800th dismissal in all formats in international cricket.

Another achievement

These were however not the only achievements for Dhoni in this Asia Cup. In the match against Afghanistan, Rohit Sharma was rested and Dhoni took over as captain. Dhoni achieved the milestone of 200th ODI match as captain.

He was returning as the captain of the India team after 696 days. Dhoni is India’s most successful captain across all formats in history. He is also the only captain in the history of cricket to win all 3 ICC trophies. He has a stellar 110 wins and 74 losses out of the 199 ODIs he captained.
