Former India cricketer Rahul Dravid is unimpressed by India’s Test match batting. He has called India’s red-ball batting a work in progress while heaping praises on India’s white-ball batting.

We have talent and back-ups in red-ball cricket: DravidĀ

While speaking with a cricket magazine, the former right-hand batsman said thatĀ in shorter format of the game, India has a lot of depth, largely due to the amount of white-ball cricket that is played. At the same time he feels that in red-ball cricket, we have talent and decent backups, but he points out that it is a work in progress.

Dravid’s statements are based on the fact that in recent times, India’s batsmen have struggled in overseas conditions such as South Africa and England in Tests but in ODIs and T20Is Indian batsmen have done exceptionally well.

First-class games before a Test are helpful feels Dravid

The former Indian number three revealed that he benefited hugely from having proper first-class games.

When asked about the current conditions, Dravid feels that maybe schedules have changed and things are more complicated, but he believes that there is no doubt that a couple of first-class games before any Test tour is only going to help.

In recent times, in practice games, teams are allowed to play all their 14 players which does not amuses Dravid. He admitted that he does not like these games as a player.

Dravid speaks on quality of batsmanship

When asked about his opinion on quality of batting in the current era, Dravid pointed out that batsmanship comprises of many things. He stated that from the prism of shot-making ability, innovation, power, ability to hit sixes and scoring at a quicker rate, then there is no doubt batsmanship has improved.

At the same time he feels that from the prism of batting time, being able to get through challenging times and being able to play on tracks on which seam or spin is more, then maybe batsmanship has declined a little bit.

He also noted that players now have to juggle between three formats and may not be getting to have as much red ball time and conditions.
