Axar Patel had a dream start to his test career and that would be an understatement. He made England batsmen to dance to his tunes on rank turners that were served for the 4 match test series against England earlier this year.
He had to fill the mighty shoes of Ravindra Jadeja who was not available due to injury which he sustained in the Australian series beforehand and India had to win the series to qualify for the finals and Axar Patel stepped up by picking 27 wickets at an average of just above 10.
Axar Patel is one of the most defensive and accurate bowlers in world cricket at the moment. The length and line he bowls is something that demands batsmen to manufacture shots as he gives nothing away. Every time England batters tried to force things, they perished and here’s what Axar Patel had to say about the approach of England batters.
If they are in doubt whether it’s spinning or not, they just play sweeps and reverse-sweeps. If one bowls stump-to-stump, then it gets tough for them but if the ball is pitched outside off-stump or leg-stump they go for the sweep. They don’t read the ball from my hand, instead, they go by where it’s pitched,”
It is not an easy task to break into the Indian side in any format and the fact that even a player of Axar Patel’s caliber had to wait for this long to play his first test says it all. But the moment he got an opportunity, he made sure that he utilized it to the fullest.
“I dont feel I was lacking anything. Unfortunately, I was injured and lost my place in ODIs. In Tests, Ashwin and Jadeja were doing well. The way Jadeja was performing, it was very hard for any other left arm spin all rounder to find a place. The wrist spinners, Kuldeep and Chahal were doing well. It was due to the team combination that I was out. When I got a chance, I just tried to prove myself,” Axar Patel added
