Happy in his own shoes, Pandya has a befitting reply for his critics

By Shalini Singh

Hardik Pandya claimed his first five-wicket haul on Day 2 as India bowled out the hosts at a paltry 161 on day two of the third Test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.

Pandya drew heavy flacks after his recent form in the ongoing series and West Indies legend Michael Holding had even questioned his all-round abilities.

In a recent post-match press conference, Hardik Pandya has answered all his critics saying that he doesn’t play for them and he doesn’t want to be compared with Indian legend Kapil Dev.

“Comparisons are fine. But the major problem is that when something goes wrong people start saying many things. When things go smoothly they start comparing, but when things go wrong, they start questioning their abilities,” he said.

“I have never wanted to be Kapil Dev. Let me be Hardik Pandya, I am happy being Hardik Pandya. I have played 40 One Day Internationals and 10 Tests being Hardik Pandya, not Kapil Dev.”

“Stop comparing me with anyone else. I will be happy if you don’t compare me with them,” he added.

Lashing back at critics Pandya said, “I don’t play for critics. They get paid to say what they say and I don’t even want to know it. I play for my country and if my team is happy with me, I don’t think anything else matters,” Pandya said.

Pandya also said that he wanted to bowl full in the second session. “I tried to swing the ball and when you swing the ball you go little full. I do not fear getting driven because if we are able to pick wickets, runs do not matter as much.”

Hardik Pandya also revealed that Ishant Sharma influenced his performance in the third Test match.

“Ishy was telling me not to go for wickets and keep bowling at the right areas.”

Reminiscing his maiden Test century, Pandya said, “I am happier with taking a five-wicket haul than scoring a ton. I think this is the second five-wicket haul of my life and I am very happy about it.”
