Harbhajan blames Ashwin for India’s defeat in England

By Chaitanya Laxman

Team India is receiving criticism from all corners after losing the Test series against England. Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh too has criticized the team and he has blamed R Ashwin for India’s loss.

According to Harbhajan, Ashwin’s failure to pick wickets in the second innings of the fourth Test enabled England to post a target which was beyond the reach of Indian batsmen. Harbhajan said that had Ashwin taken just two or three wickets, not even a five-wicket haul, then India would have been chasing a target of 160-170 runs for victory which was very much achievable.

Harbhajan was speaking with a news channel as he analyzed Ashwin’s performance and blamed him for India’s defeat. Harbhajan pointed out that there was so much help available on the wicket for the off-spinners. He said just landing the ball at the particular rough patch would have fetched a lot of wickets. He gave the example of Moeen Ali who picked up nine wickets in the Test. Harbhajan said that this is exactly what Moeen Ali did and got so many wickets.

Harbhajan’s dejection was clearly seen as he said that for the first time he saw England spinners bowling better than our spinners.

However, the former Indian spinner did remind everyone about Ashwin’s glorious past and his previous performances. He said that Ashwin is a great bowler and has achieved so much for India. But Harbhajan also pointed out that he failed to take wickets when it mattered the most — that is on Day 3.

When asked about Ashwin’s injury and the chances of the injury affecting Ashwin’s performance, the ‘turbanator’ said that he really doesn’t know how serious Ashwin’s injury was and if it was serious then the team management should have known it.

At the same time, Harbhajan praised Moeen Ali. He said Moeen was making a comeback in the team and he won the Man-of-the-match award. Talking about Moeen’s bowling, the Indian spinner said that Moeen is a very good bowler though does not rate himself so highly and he will always bowl better than the rest as his trajectory is very good.
