Khaleel Ahmed

India’s young left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed, who was instrumental in India’s record 224-run win over Windies in the fourth ODI at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Monday, 29 October, received an official warning and one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel on Tuesday.

Khaleel Ahmed received an official warning and one demerit point for advancing aggressively towards Marlon Samuels after dismissing him in the 14th over during the fourth one-day international. After Samuels was caught in the slip by Rohit Sharma, Khaleel couldn’t control his aggression and charged aggressively towards Marlon Samuels. According to the on-field umpires- Ian Gould and  Anil Chaudhary, the celebration was provocative in nature.

As a result, the young pacer, who returned with impressive figures of three for 13, was found to have violated Article 2.5 of the Code, which relates to-

“using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an international match.”

After the match, Khaleel admitted the offence and accepted the charges levied on him by umpires Ian Gould and Anil Chaudhary, third umpire Paul Wilson, and fourth umpire Chettithody Shamshuddin. According to match referee Chris Board, there was no need for a formal hearing and Ahmed was left with a warning and one demerit point.

Batting first in the 4th ODI, India posted a mammoth 377 runs target, courtesy brilliant centuries from Rohit Sharma (162) and Ambati Rayudu (100). Khaleel Ahmed and Kuldeep Yadav were the picks of the bowlers for India with three wickets apiece.

The Men in Blue now lead the 5-match ODI series by 2-1 with one more match to go. India needs to avoid a defeat in the final ODI to seal the series.
