India vs England, 1st ODI: India beat England by 8 wickets

By Abhishek Shankar

India emerged victorious over England by beating the host during the 1st ODI at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, Thursday, July 12.

Kuldeep left everyone in awe during the T20I last week, and he continued his spell bounding performance in the first ODI in England as well to keep the hosts down to 268.

As a result, he becomes the first of his kind to take six wickets in a single match.

His left-arm illegible set has left the English players for a lot of things to ponder upon.

The inability of England’s batsmen to understand the variations of India’s wrist spinner played a vital role in this. The T20 series offered England enough hope that they can work out Kuldeep but in vain.

Kuldeep was declared the player of the match.

India, led by Rohit Sharma’s century, crushed England, by chasing the target in just 40.1 overs. Rohit, who always takes time to settle and then accelerate, hit 15 fours and four sixes.

He completed his century without any struggle. In order to celebrate the hundred, he also hit a one-handed six off Moeen Ali.

The top two ODI teams in the world will look to this series to get into their best form ahead of next year’s World Cup.

The match started with both Jason Roy (38) and Jonny Bairstow (38) adding 73 for the opening stand with a number of boundaries. Moeen Ali (24) and Adil Rashid (22) played quite well to help England cross the 250-run mark before they were all out in the final over with one delivery left. England had crumbled to 82 for 3, losing three wickets for nine runs in the space of 16 balls.

This brought Stokes and Buttler together at the crease, and they held a great partnership of 93 runs for the fifth wicket. Buttler smacked his 18th ODI half-century off 45 balls. Stokes too completed his 12th ODI half-century off 102 balls.
