The third T20I match between New Zealand and India will go down as one of the best T20 matches of all time. It was a heartbreaking loss for Kane Williamson and his side. But, India created a few records during this win. The team did break an eight-year-old record held by West Indies.

India had batted well to reach 179 but it seemed like a part score considering the pitch and the short boundaries at Seddon Park. Kane Williamson stole the show with the bat for New Zealand but his wicket in the final over of the match led to the Kiwis choking badly. Ross Taylor and Tim Seifert couldn’t a single run off the bat in the last three balls by Mohammad Shami as the match went into the super over.

India breaks West Indies’ records

Jasprit Bumrah landed his yorkers, but Kane Williamson who had got 95 runs from 48 balls in the main match, had two back to back boundaries under his belt. He stuck him for a six and a four before Martin Guptill got the ball rolling to the fence on the final delivery which ensured New Zealand were a happy side with 17 runs in the super over.

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul found only one four in the first four balls, leaving 10 runs left to be scored off two balls. Rohit Sharma smashed Tim Southee for back to back sixes which sealed the match for Indians. In this process, India ended with a score of 20 for 0 in the super over. This is the highest score in Super over by any international team in the history of T20Is. The previous record of the highest super over score while chasing was held by West Indies of 19 for no loss. Interestingly, they made this score in an ICC World T20 match against New Zealand in 2012.

New Zealand and Super overs: A sad, sad story

It was also New Zealand’s fifth loss in Super overs in T20Is. Their only super over win came against Australia in 2010. They had also lost the World Cup final last year in a Super Over. India and New Zealand will face other in the fourth T20I on Friday, January 31 at the Sky Stadium in Wellington. After the win in Hamilton, India also sealed the series win. It is India’s first T20I series win in New Zealand.
