IPL 2021: 5 Foreign players in playing XI?

One of the main reasons for the glitz and glamour of the world’s richest and the most competitive league in Indian Premier League is the participation of top quality superstars from all over the world which is something that other leagues in the world doesn’t get to experience.

There has been a lot of speculations over the inclusion of an additional franchise or two in the last 2 years or so which might also pave way for the increase in the number of overseas players in the playing 11 and that might come into reality in IPL 2021

5 overseas players in the playing 11 in IPL 2021?

There is hardly 6 months left for the next season of IPL and BCCI are already pondering over several issues which they need to sort it out in time before the season. One major agenda for BCCI will be to decide about the number of overseas players in a playing11. At the moment, there are only 4 overseas players allowed in the playing11 but a BCCI official said that they are considering to increase it to 5.

“Some of the franchises have been requesting from the last couple of editions to increase the number of foreigners in the playing11. BCCI is yet to have a serious discussion on the same. Once again request in this regard has been made by some franchises, we will take this up at appropriate forum,” BCCI official told to InsideSport.

Is it a boon or a bane?

This can be an advantage and there are every chances that allowing 5 overseas players in the playing11 might improve the quality of the league to a greater extent if it is a 10 team tournament because in this way, the Indian contingent will get enough chances.

This will be a terrible idea if BCCI allows 5 overseas players in the playing11 in a 8 team competition as it will do no good to the local Indian players as their spots will be taken by the overseas players. It will destroy the chances of 8 Indian players which should be avoided at all cost.
