The Indian Premier League (IPL) was postponed to April 15 due to the coronavirus outbreak. But things continue to look bleak as the tournament could be pushed further back as a result of the growing pandemic. The outbreak has put the world on a stand still as people look to quarantine themselves in their apartments. Mass gatherings have been strictly prohibited by the government which has impacted the sporting events all around the world.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also displayed their support to the measures the Indian government is implementing. All domestic and international tournaments have been cancelled by the higher officials. IPL 2020 was originally scheduled for March 29 which was moved to April 15.
There is a possibility of the mega event being shifted to the July-September window. In instances such as the general elections, the entire tournament was held in South Africa in 2009, meanwhile, in 2014, the early half of the league took place in the United Arab Emirates, whereas the final half was conducted back home in India. That being said, BCCI officials are considering alternatives if the deadline of April 15 is pushed back.
The BCCI is set to hold a conference call with the owners of the eight franchises on March 24, Tuesday. After which a decision could be made regarding the fate of the new season. Keeping aside the IPL, several other sporting events such as the English Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, NBA and the UFC.
That being said, it remains a question whether the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be held behind at closed doors or pushed further until notice, or takes place at another nation somewhere down the line. As per recent reports the coronavirus pandemic has infected over three hundred thousand people across the globe. Which is why the masses are trying their best to stay indoors and stop the spread.
