MI vs RR IPL 2019 report: Buttler blitz triumphs de Kock special

By Chaitanya Laxman

A sterling performance by Jos Buttler aided by Ajinkya Rahane’s sublime innings allowed Rajasthan to triumph Mumbai Indians at Wankhade stadium. Buttler’s 89 runs off 43 balls took Rajasthan home despite Mumbai picking four wickets in nine balls in the dying stages of the match.

Rahane, Buttler give Rajasthan flying start

Chasing 187 runs, Rajasthan got off to a flying start with Ajinkya Rahane and Jos Buttler cantering 59 runs off the Powerplay overs. But Rahane (37 off 21 balls) was dismissed in the 7th over however that didn’t deter Buttler as he slammed three sixes in the next 8 balls.

But he reserved his best for Joseph whom he slammed 28 runs in the 13th over including two sixes and four fours. But Chahar brought curtains on Buttler’s show in the next over however the damage was already been done.

Mumbai’s failed attempt to comeback

Mumbai tried to stage a comeback as Bumrah removed Samson on the fifth ball of the 17th over and Krunal sent back Tripathi and Livingstone in the same over. Bumrah removed Smith on the first ball of the next over to create drama but Gopal creamed two fours to take Rajasthan home in the 19th over.

de Kock delivers for Mumbai

Earlier in the afternoon, after a long time, finally Mumbai saw both their openers clicking in the same innings. Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock scored 96 runs for the first wicket in 11 overs. But a miscued pull against Archer saw Rohit getting caught by Buttler for 47 off 32 balls.

The failure of Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard meant Mumbai had dull middle overs as the team scored only 42 runs between over 11 to 16. But de Kock remained strong and produced a big knock to keep the accelerator on the scoring rate.

He hammered 81 runs off 52 balls but he was dismissed by the Buttler-Archer combo in the 19th over.

Hardik Pandya came to Mumbai’s rescue once again and lifted the score and Mumbai’s spirits with his dashing ball striking. He collared Archer for a six off a freak helicopter hit in the mid-wicket stand  on the last ball of the 19th over and then scored 16 off the last over.

He finished with 28 runs off just 11 balls with three sixes and Mumbai scored 187 in their 20 overs.
