Former Australia captain Steve Waugh is not sure whether the current India team led by Virat Kohli is better than the India teams he played against. But he believes that this time India have a more rounded team and the series between Australia and India will be a close one.

Waugh feels Shastri should have avoided saying these comments

Team India coach Ravi Shastri recently made a statement that the current Indian team is the best side in the last 15 years.

While responding to this statement, Waugh said in an interview that he has played against some great Indian sides and he is not sure that the current side is better than the ones they played against.

He  believes that probably this is not a great thing to say as it puts extra pressure on the team. He explained that once India starts losing, they will get a lot of criticism for that.

He noted that it’s good that Ravi Shastri believes in his side but he feels that comments like these could be kept to himself.

Waugh praises Kohli

At the same time, the former Aussie captain praised Virat Kohli. He said that Kohli is a great player and he loves these big moments. He feels Kohli is like Tendulkar and Lara. They wait for these and that’s where they want to show their best.

The Aussie legend made it clear that  Kohli will be the dangerman straightaway but they have some pretty good batsmen.

He added that India have quite a rounded team and they will see this as a significant chance.  He feels that they would have prepared for this tour for a long time and it is going to be a really close series.

Waugh confident that Australia will win

The former right-hand batsman believes that Australia will be hard to beat in Australia. He pointed out that they have a bowling attack as good as any team in world cricket and they can take wickets.

He feels that if their batting scores 350 runs in first innings, they will be very hard to beat. And someone will always come and do well and that’s the nature of the sport.

Waugh is still pretty confident that Australia can win in Australia but also feels that it’s going to be a close series though.
