Playing Kuldeep at Lord’s was a mistake: Ravi Shastri

Shastri calls including Kuldeep Yadav in playing XI a mistake

India’s decision of including left-arm spinner, Kuldeep Yadav in playing XI was a fault, said Ravi Shastri after India’s training session in Nottingham.

“I would say that it was an error. We could have gone with an extra seamer and it might have helped,” he said.

Kuldeep Yadav and R Ashwin couldn’t get even a single wicket as the pitch gave assistance to Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes smashed the Indian bowlers at Lord’s.

Defending his move, Shastri said, “Then again, you didn’t know much it would rain. We didn’t know if a match could go into the final day where we might have needed a spinner.”

“But the amount it rained and the amount of time we lost, having a seamer would have been better,” he added.

But, Shastri understands that brooding over the past won’t fetch results and resurrecting India’s batting order is need of the moment.

None of the Indian batsmen could score a century against England in the previous two matches and skipper Kohli and India’s head coach, Ravi Shastri would want the team to resolve their problems and come out stronger.

Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan stitched a 50-run partnership in the first Test but the Indian openers failed in the second Test.

Experienced players like Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara have also struggled so far in the English conditions.

However, this hasn’t shaken Shastri’s trust. Talking about Rahane’s form Shastri said, “He is one of our pillars and he will remain that.”

“Conditions haven’t favoured the batsmen, but that is where character and mental strength is tested,” he added.

He was also asked about the inclusion of Rishabh Pant in the third match, but he chose to remain silent.

India will take on England for the third Test at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Saturday.
