The revelation came on the heels of the appointment of Shakib Al Hasan as the ODI skipper, a decision that ended days of speculation and added a definitive tone to the team’s leadership. However, as the cricketing fraternity awaited the squad announcement, one lingering question was whether the seasoned campaigner Mahmudullah Riyad would secure his comeback to the national side.

Despite Mahmudullah’s wealth of experience and his potential contribution to a major tournament, the 37-year-old cricketer, who was dropped following underwhelming performances in the ODIs against England last March, found himself missing from the selected roster. The decision raised eyebrows and left many wondering if Mahmudullah had possibly played his final game in the Bangladesh jersey, especially considering his earlier retirements from Test and T20 formats.

As one chapter seemingly closes, another begins, and in the spotlight stands Tanzid Hasan Tamim, a promising left-handed opener. Tanzid, after impressing with his consistent performance for the Bangladesh A side in the recently concluded Emerging Asia Cup, has earned his maiden call-up to the national team. His inclusion comes as a significant step forward for the young cricketer, offering a chance to carve a prosperous international career. Tanzid’s selection as one of the three openers, alongside Liton Das and Mohammad Naim, comes as the team aims to fill the void left by the experienced Tamim Iqbal, who withdrew from the tournament due to injury concerns.

Joining the ranks of the newcomers is Shamim Hossain, who is yet to make his ODI debut. His inclusion speaks of the selectors’ keen eye on emerging talents. Additionally, Mahedi Hasan, who last featured in an ODI for Bangladesh in 2021, has made a comeback, bringing his all-round abilities to the team. Spinner Nasum Ahmed, too, returns to the squad after a hiatus, adding depth to the bowling department. Nasum’s last ODI appearance was during the Ireland series earlier this year.

The pace battery remains a familiar force, with the likes of Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Ebadot Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, and Hasan Mahmud all securing their spots in the squad. Their collective prowess and experience are poised to provide the necessary firepower to the Bangladesh team in the Asia Cup.
