Imran Khan announces Pakistan Cricket Board’s new Chairman

By Christopher Paul

Najam Sethi resigned from his post as the Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board, soon after Imran Khan took oath as the new Prime Minister of Pakistan. Sethi stated that he was waiting for Khan to take the oath, to resign. He wished best of luck to the team and wished them, Eid Mubarak.

Sethi succeeded Shahryar Khan in this role. He was unanimously elected in August 2017 by all ten members of the Board of Governors. His term was supposed to end in 2020 but he gave up his position. He said that he hoped he had served the cause of cricket well.

He sent a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan stating his desire to resign. Khan was quick to find a replacement. He selected and appointed Ehsan Mani for the role and said in a tweet that Mani would bring vast experience to the job. Mani represented Pakistan in the ICC, held the position of Treasurer for 3 years and then headed the ICC for another 3 years. Khan has to nominate Mni on the Board of Governors, after which Mani can contest elections for the post of Chairman.

Imran Khan himself was a stellar cricketer, one of the best all-rounders in cricket history. Khan captained his team to victory in the 1992 World Cup against England at Melbourne.  Imran played 88 Tests and 175 ODIs in his career. In Tests, he scored 3807 runs and bagged 362 wickets while in ODIS, he scored 3709 runs and picked up 182 wickets.

The illustrious cricketer joined politics after retirement from the game. After nearly 20 years in politics, Khan took oath as the Prime Minister of Pakistan on 18th August. Former Pakistani cricketers such as Ramiz Raja, Wasim Akram and Inzamam-ul-Haque graced the ceremony, among others.

Indian cricketers Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and Navjot Singh Sidhu were invited to the ceremony but only Sidhu attended.
