The biggest news update coming from the Mumbai Indians (MI) camp is that they are not playing their premier overseas pace bowler Jason Behrendorff in the playing XI for their first game of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2023) season against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. After winning as many as five IPL trophies and earning the tag of the most successful franchise in the history of the T20 tournament, the Mumbai Indians failed to qualify for the playoffs during the last two IPL seasons on the trot. Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom of the table in IPL 2022.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma revealed that their overseas left-arm pacer Jason Behrendorff is not part of the initial MI Playing 11 in this RCB vs MI IPL 2023 match on Sunday. Interestingly, the Australian fast bowler is named as one of the five substitute members out of which one can be used as an Impact Player at any moment in the game. Interestingly, Mumbai Indians have included just three overseas players in their playing XI, Tim David, Cameron Green and Jofra Archer, therefore, they have the luxury to include the Impact player as an overseas cricketer as well. Ahead of the IPL 2023 auction, Behrendorff was traded to the Mumbai Indians from Royal Challengers Bangalore and the left-arm pace bowler has taken a total of 5 wickets from as many IPL matches at an economy of 8.68.
