West Indies players wear black arm-bands on day one

Prithvi Shaw stole the limelight on day one of the first Test between India and West Indies but there was one more thing that caught the attention of everyone. The West Indies players were seen wearing black arm-bands during the day’s play.

Later in the day, the West Indies cricket board revealed the reason for it through a tweet.

The West Indies players wore the black arm-band as a mark of respect to their team-mate Kemar Roach who is currently in his home country Barbados mourning the death of his grandmother.

The tweet posted by WICB said that ‘The WINDIES Players are wearing black armbands to pay respect to their Teammate Kemar Roach who’s mourning the passing of his grandmother. #WIvIND #WindiesCricket #ItsOurGame.

Kemar Roach will be returning back to India before the completion of the 5th Test and the team’s coach Stuart Law hoped that he will play in the second Test.

Meanwhile, a sterling hundred on debut by Prithvi Shaw and vital contributions from Cheteshwar Pujara and skipper Virat Kohli enabled India to plunder 364 runs on day one of the Rajkot Test.

West Indies whose bowling attack was depleted by the absence of Kemar Roach suffered further as their captain and frontline bowler Jason Holder was ruled out of the match due to an injury. This meant West Indies played with only one experienced bowler in the form of Shannon Gabriel in the Test and India made the most of this opportunity.

Prithvi Shaw raced off to a quick-fire hundred while Cheteshwar Pujara who generally takes his time to score runs brought his half-century in the first session itself. Later in the day, Virat Kohli ensured India’s grip remained tight on the game by playing a solid inning.
