Indian batting stalwart Virat Kohli had added another feather to his cap in ODI cricket by becoming the second batter in the history of the game to score 15,000 runs in the format. He achieved this monumental feat during his blistering unbeaten ton against the West Indies at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. On his way to a sumptuous 88-ball 139*, Kohli joined the legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar as only the second batter in the history of the format to score over 15,000 runs.

Virat Kohli’s monumental hundred helped India take a 1-0 lead in the 3-match ODI series against West Indies. The 38-year-old entered the series needing 59 runs to complete 15,000 ODI runs, and he reached the mark in a dramatic fashion during the 29th over of India’s chase. Facing West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph, Kohli found the gap and struck consecutive boundaries, sparking loud cheers across the Greenfield Stadium as he raised his bat to acknowledge a standing ovation from the crowd.
Kohli reached the 15,000-run milestone in his 315th ODI and 303rd innings. In comparison, Sachin Tendulkar reached the same landmark in 377 innings. By taking 74 fewer innings than the “Master Blaster,” Kohli became the fastest player in cricket history to cross 15,000 ODI runs, highlighting his incredible scoring rate and efficiency in white-ball cricket. Adding to his milestone is the fact that Kohli scored his 55th ODI ton, a summit where he stands all alone with no one to follow.
With this latest achievement, Kohli stands far ahead of former Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara, who sits third on the all-time run-scorers list. Below is the breakdown of the top 10 run-getters in ODI history:
The only active player in this list who is chasing Virat Kohli right now is his teammate Rohit Sharma, who has registered 11,927 runs in 281 ODI innings.
Kohli’s journey to 15,000 runs stands out not only for its pace but also for his career batting average of nearly 60, which remains the highest among all players with over 5,000 runs in ODI history. In addition to his total runs, Kohli holds the record for the most centuries in ODI cricket with 55 tons, having surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing tally of 49 centuries during the 2023 ODI World Cup.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the ongoing 3-match ODI series against the West Indies, Team India now preps for the second game, set to be played at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, Assam, on Wednesday, 30th September. If India wins that game, they will take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, with one game to play.
