Ravi Bishnoi catch: As the IPL crew moves on to their next destination, Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders met in the first IPL game at Ahmedabad’s newly built Narendra Modi Stadium. KKR captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and elected to bowl first. PBKS struggled to get any momentum and ended up on a below par total.
Punjab Kings were looking for few early inroads if they were to defend the total of 123 runs. Kolkata Knight Riders lost both their openers pretty quickly and sent Sunil Narine in search of some quick runs. As soon as he came in, PBKS fast-bowlers targeted him with some short stuff.
Sunil Narine tried to pull one of Arshdeep Singh’s deliveries but couldn’t get enough bat on it and ball looped up in the air towards the mid-wicket region. Ravi Bishnoi, who was placed at a squarer position, covered a significant distance and took one of the finest grabs so far this season. KKR were jolted early thanks to some outstanding fielding efforts from Punjab Kings.
After being sent in, PBKS batsmen couldn’t adjust themselves to sluggish conditions on offer at Ahmedabad. It was visible from their scorecard as well, only Chris Jordan went at a SR of more than 100. Because of his quick-fire 30 from 18 balls, PBKS could reach 123 from their 20 overs.
In reply, after losing some early wickets, KKR were given stability by the duo of Eoin Morgan and Rahul Tripathi in the middle. The former anchored the chase with his unbeaten 47 while Rahul Tripathi added 41 runs to the total. In the end, KKR cruised home comfortably by 5 wickets and with more than 3 overs to spare.
