Oval Test in 1971

Indian team after defeating mighty West Indies toured England in 1971 for a three-match test series. The first two Tests between the nations ended in a draw while the third and final Test at Oval witnessed India’s first-ever Test match and series win in England.

Batting first, Alan Knott’s 90, John Jameson 82 and Richard Hutton 82 helped England post a first-innings total of 335 runs. In reply, Indian batsmen got the starts but failed to convert into big innings. Ray Illingworth picked up a five-wicket haul and handed home side a 71 run lead as the visitors managed only 284 runs in their first innings.

The home side suffered a batting debacle in the second innings as Bhagwat Chandrashekhar’s brilliant six-wicket haul bowled out England for just 101, setting India a target of 173. Chasing the target, Team India suffered an early blow as opener Sunil Gavaskar went back to the dressing room with just 2 runs on the board.

Skipper Ajit Wadekar along with Dilip Sardesai stitched a partnership to move the scoreline above 70 but a mix up saw the former running himself out for 45. However, Farokh Engineer and Syed Abid Ali made sure that visitors achieve the target comfortably and end on the winning side. Team India won the Test match and the series but also ended England’s winning streak of 24 Test matches.
