Asked to bat first, Team India had a solid opening partnership of 60 runs. However, the visitors tumbled and were reduced from 60/1 to 82/3. Skipper Virat Kohli (97) and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane (81) then joined hands and stitched 159 runs partnerships to steady the Indian ship. Crucial contributions by Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant down the order helped visitors post 352 runs in the first innings.

In reply, England was bundled out for just 161 runs as Hardik Pandya claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Team India then displayed a brilliant batting performance. Skipper Virat Kohli smashed his second century of the Test series and on account of the fifties by Cheteshwar Pujara and Junior Pandya the visitors declared their innings on 352, setting the home side a mammoth target of 529 runs to chase.

Chasing the target, English batsmen except for Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes failed to score runs and were bowled out for 317 runs and Team India made a cut to the home side’s lead in the five-match series to 2-1.
