Chennai Super Kings go head-to-head against Gujarat Titans in the Qualifier 1 match of the Indian Premier League at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on 23rd May, Tuesday at 7:30 PM IST.
Last season, Chennai Super Kings weren’t at their best, they finished just above Mumbai Indians at the ninth spot, unusual for a team that has qualified for playoffs pretty much every season they’ve played. MS Dhoni finished that season not on a high. However, they are back to their best this season. Super Kings didn’t get off to a winning note against the defending champions in the first game of the season.
However, from the next game they didn’t look back, they ensured they notch up a few wins and were always there in contention for qualification. With key players missing out early in the tournament, was a big setback. Their overseas players like Devon Conway, Moeen Ali, Matheesha Pathirana, and Maheesh Theekshana all stepped up and won the games on their own. It was Devon Conway who set the tone pretty much every single game and Ruturaj Gaikwad gave good company as well.
Shivam Dube was the revelation of the tournament for them, his power hitting skills came to the fore and helped Chennai accelerate at crucial junctures of the game. Talking about their bowling, Matheesha Pathirana was brilliant, his death bowling skills are something that many teams struggled to pick.
Deepak Chahar was ordinary at the start but as the tournament progressed, he picked his rhythm and started picking up wickets. Maheesh Theekshana was the gun bowler in the powerplay, gave nothing away almost. All in all, Chennai Super Kings have all the skills in the quiver, and they might just be the team to halt the unstoppable Gujarat Titans.
Gujarat Titans, the defending champions haven’t put a foot wrong in the tournament. They seemed like they took off from where they left off last season and finished at the top of the table as well. Hardik Pandya has led his side fearlessly, pretty much the way MS Dhoni has done for Chennai Super Kings. Shubman Gill has been in top-notch form for them.
Wriddhiman Saha has done well in patches, but his wicket-keeping skills are best to none. In the middle order, David Miller has been in good form and Rahul Tewatia has shown consistency in finishing games. Talking about the bowling, Mohammed Shami the purple cap holder for now has been sensational. Rashid Khan showed that he’s not only great at picking wickets, he’s a powerful hitter of the cricket ball and not to be underestimated by the opposition.
Noor Ahmad has been impressive, Vijay Shankar in the chances he’s got, he’s made it count as well. Not to forget Mohit Sharma, what a season he’s had, he’s been amongst the wickets for them. Gujarat Titans look the strongest among the two, but even if Gujarat go down, they have another shot in Qualifier 2.

The pitch in Chepauk is generally dry and hard which is going to deteriorate over time as the game progresses. Since it’s dry and hard, the batters will enjoy hitting through the line and the bowlers should try and find the right lengths and target the stumps more often. Teams usually opt to bat first. The average first innings total is 174.
In recent times, the pitch has shown that it’s not an easy one to bat on, the spinners will come into play for most part of the game. Teams batting first have to ensure they have wickets in hand to go big in the end. During the run chase, the ball will get slower and lower. 5 wickets were picked by pacers, while the spinners bagged 4 wickets.

One of the reasons why the Chennai Super Kings have done well with the bat is the opening combination. It’s Devon Conway in particular who looked in great touch this season and ever so consistent.
Ruturaj Gaikwad started off the season in brilliant fashion, but he found himself in a strangle in the mid part of the tournament. However, Gaikwad has come to terms in the last few games.
Shubman Gill is a terrific batter for Gujarat this season, he’s been amongst the runs and does the bulk of the scoring most of the time.
Mohammed Shami has been lethal with the ball for Gujarat, he’s the leading wicket taker in the side and has led the team from the front with the ball.
