Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele, September 3rd at 07:00 PM IST
It was a sublime effort from the visitors to win the first T20I against Sri Lanka by 5 wickets at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in an evening affair. The two teams will now stay back here to play the second game of the series.
Winning the toss and batting first, Sri Lankan innings got off to a flier courtesy some lusty blows from Kusal Mendis. His knock of 79 from 53 deliveries set the tone for Sri Lanka’s big score. However, no able support from the middle-order meant that the hosts were reduced to 179 for the loss of 4 wickets after a terrific start.
Skipper Tim Southee led from the front with the ball as he scalped 2 wickets for 20 runs from 4 overs. New Zealand didn’t have a stable start in the chase as they lost their first three wickets for just 39 runs.
However, a 79 runs stand for the fourth wicket between Ross Taylor and Colin de Grandhomme asserted their chase and the Blackcaps finally got over the line with 5 wickets in hand and 3 balls to spare.
One more win here for the Blackcaps will see them take an unassailable lead in the three-match series. The hosts will be looking to bounce back in this game to stay alive in the series.

As seen in the first game, the ball was coming onto the bat pretty nicely but at the same time, there was ample swing for the new ball bowlers. With another windy and cloudy day expected, we once again can witness a good battle between the bat and ball.

Fantasy picks from Sri Lanka-
Kusal Mendis was exceptional in the last match as he scored 79 from 53 deliveries which included 8 fours and 2 sixes.
Wicket-keeper batsman Kusal Perera is a brute-force at the top order. Although he got out cheaply in the last game but his pyrotechnics are definitely somewhere around the corner. He has scored a fifty in his last 4 T20I innings.
Niroshan Dickwella is another impactful player. He is not opening the innings in this series but is a reliable bet. In the last game, he scored 33 before getting run-out unfortunately. He has a healthy strike-rate of 138.84 in T20Is.
Skipper Lasith Malinga is just 1 short of 100 T20I wickets. He will be the first bowler to achieve this accolade in T20Is. He finished with figures of 2 for 23 in the last game.
Fantasy picks from New Zealand-
Ross Taylor is definitely a pivotal part of this inexperienced batting line-up. He proved his mettle in the last game with a 29-balls 48 and was involved in a match-saving partnership along with Colin de Grandhomme.
Martin Guptill got out cheaply in the last game but us a real game-changer on his own. He has 2283 runs against his name from 75 T20I innings which is the most by any batsmen in this format.
Colin Munro holds the record for most centuries in T20Is. He has scored 3 centuries and has accumulated 1411 runs from 50 innings.
Skipper Tim Southee was the pick of the bowlers in the last game as he finished the night with 2 for 20 from 4 overs.
All-rounders Colin de Grandhomme and Mitchell Santner are handy with both bat and ball. de Grandhomme has 305 runs to his name along with 10 wickets from 17 innings, meanwhile, Mitchell Santner has scored 211 runs from 21 innings at a strike-rate of 125.59 and taken 35 wickets from 31 matches.
