Shubhman Gill is a young and upcoming Indian professional cricketer who presently represents India in Test and ODI cricket. He was also included in the Indian Test team for the tour of Australia and did well there. In the Indian Premier League, he plays for the Kolkata Night Riders.
He was born on 8 September 1999 in Fazilka, Punjab, India. Realizing his potential very early, his father moved to Mohali so that he could have better access to cricketing facilities. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and VVS Laxman were his childhood heroes. With his natural talent and hard work he soon flowered into a capable batter and blazed away to glory in the U-16 and U-18 tournaments in India. The culmination of this phase of his cricketing career was in the 2018 U-19 World cup which India won for the record fourth time. As a Vice Captain, he scored 418 runs at an average of 104.5 in that tournament.
Shubhman Gill, with his talent coupled with passion and diligent approach, was soon recognized as a promising star and was picked up by KKR during the IPL auction held in Jan 2018. He is also known for his fielding prowess and is trusted by his captains in close-in positions. He made his international debut in the ODI series against New Zealand on 31 January 2019 at Hamilton. Sunil Gavaskar, predicting a bright future for him has said, “He has the temperament to become a great player”.
Shubhman Gill’s outstanding display with the bat and his immense contribution to the U-19 World Cup coupled with his successes in the domestic tournaments was bound to result in an IPL call. Kolkata Knight Riders drafted him in the IPL auctions held in Jan 2018 for Rs 1.8 Crore.

He justified the faith put in him by the franchise by scoring at an average of 33 with a strike rate of 146 in that year’s IPL, with his highest being 56 not out. In IPL 2019 and IPL 2020, his strike rate was a notch lower at around 120 but he continued with the steady average of 32-33 with his highest being 76 and 70* in the two seasons respectively. He was awarded the “Emerging Player Award” during the IPL 19.

These include smoothly executed off drives, elegant back foot strokes, powerful pulls, and lofted drives over the third man off the rising deliveries. In a lighter vein, he is observed to be a bit superstitious and is always seen with a red handkerchief when he comes for batting. He has scored 1132 runs in 50 IPL matches so far with an average of 30, remaining unbeaten on ten occasions.
After a stellar U-19 world cup performance and notable successes in the domestic tournaments, Kolkata Knight Riders drafted Shubman Gill for INR 1.8 crores. His returns from the franchise compare poorly with players like Rishabh Pant, who started in 2016 with a salary similar to Gill, but in 2021, Pant will take home a massive INR 15 crore, at par with some of the biggest stars.
