Jason Roy IPL

Jason Roy, the explosive England opener, has made a name for himself in the shortest format of the game with his aggressive strokeplay and ability to dominate bowlers. He has played for various T20 franchises across the globe and has been a consistent performer in T20 leagues. However, his performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been far from impressive.

Jason Roy IPL

Roy has been part of four IPL franchises since his debut in 2017. He was signed by the Gujarat Lions in 2017 and later played for the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, he was picked by the Sunrisers Hyderabad, but could only play three games before being ruled out due to an injury. In total, he has played 13 IPL matches, scoring 329 runs at an average of 29.91 and a strike rate of 129.02. These numbers may seem decent, but they don’t reflect the true story of his IPL career.

Let’s take a closer look at Jason Roy IPL career and his performances in each season:

2017 IPL Season
Jason Roy was signed by the Gujarat Lions for the 2017 IPL season. He played three matches and scored 59 runs at an average of 29.50 and a strike rate of 147.50. He had a decent start to his IPL career, but it was too early to judge his potential as he had only played a handful of matches.

2018 IPL Season
In 2018, Roy was picked by the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for a price of INR 1.5 crores. He played five matches and scored 120 runs at an average of 30.00 and a strike rate of 127.65. He had a couple of good innings, including an unbeaten 91, but overall his performances were below par. Delhi finished last in the points table that season, and Roy was not retained for the next season.

2019 IPL Season
Roy was again picked by Delhi for the 2019 season, but he played only three matches due to the World Cup commitments. He scored 70 runs at an average of 23.33 and a strike rate of 138.23. He had a good start to the tournament, scoring a quickfire 50 in his first match, but failed to deliver in the next two matches.

2020 IPL Season
Roy was signed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2020, but his stint in the tournament was short-lived. He played only three matches and scored 110 runs at an average of 36.66 and a strike rate of 142.85. He had a good start to the tournament, scoring 40 and 31 in his first two matches, but was ruled out due to an injury.

2021 IPL Season
Roy went unsold in the 2021 IPL auction but was later picked by the Sunrisers Hyderabad as a replacement for Mitchell Marsh. He played only two matches and scored 38 runs at an average of 19.00 and a strike rate of 135.71. He failed to make an impact in both matches and was dropped from the playing XI.

From the above analysis, it is evident that Roy has failed to make an impact in the IPL despite being a T20 heavyweight. He has played for four franchises but has not been able to cement his place in any of them. His average of 29.91 and a strike rate of 129.02 are below par for a player of his caliber. His inconsistency and inability to convert starts into big scores have been major issues throughout his IPL career.

Jason Roy’s IPL career has been a disappointment so far. Despite being a fantastic T20 player, he has failed to deliver in the IPL. While there are reasons for his poor performance, he needs to work on his game to make an impact in the tournament. With the 2022 IPL auction around the corner, it will be interesting to see if any team takes a chance on him and if he can finally make a mark in the tournament.
