Celtic fans weren’t happy. And why should they be? For the man who claimed to be Celt for life, a boyhood fan, left the club in the mid-season for a mid-table Premier League team.
Even the former players, who donned that famous Celtic shirt with utmost pride, made their feelings known either through social media channels or on some football shows. They weren’t happy at all. They damned his decision.
The fans took it to another level by unfurling a banner inside the very stadium where he was loved, venerated like a messiah who could take this club to its former glory days. The banner read, “You traded immortality for mediocrity.”
That Immortality emanated from his nearly impeccable record. In fact, it’s too good to feel true, but yeah, it’s true. During his 32-month period at Celtic, he won every domestic trophy available – seven in all – breaking records that had stood for many decades. The mythical 10 consecutive league titles were being envisaged by the Celtic supporters.
But he left. He risked immortality for mediocrity.
He is Brendan Rodgers. He chose to leave Scotland for the Premier League. Right decision, of course. For he would get more recognition by making Leicester City a regular fixture for the Europa League places in England, rather than guiding Celtic to all the domestic titles every year.
He is a talented manager. Too good for a one-team league. His effect can already be seen as Leicester have moved to 7th in the Premier League table.
Rafael Benitez, meanwhile, claimed that Newcastle United can become one of the true big boys of English football when he guided them to the Premier League promotion. No, he wasn’t getting carried away. Not at all.
The Toons have a fanatic fan base which could fill their 50,000 stadia two times over. What they lack is a good owner, with deep pockets who is ready to spend big.
But it’s not happening. Mike Ashley is still there. And he is too reluctant to spend even a penny. That’s why the squad is too weak to compete at the Premier League level. And that’s why Benitez is forced to set his targets accordingly, which is to avoid the relegation.
In that sense, the Toons are on course to achieve the safety for yet another season. As things stand in the Premier League, Newcastle are 15th with 35 points from 33 games.

LEI vs NEW Dream11 FANTASY TEAM:
INDIA FANTASY PREDICTION:
Leicester have won five times in the last six games against Newcastle United, as many as they managed in the previous 29 games.
However, that sole win for Toons came in the last fixture at the King Power Stadium as goals from Jonjo Shelvey and Ayoze Perez ensured a 1-2 away win for Rafael Benitez’s side.
But the Foxes are a completely different team these days and we back the hosts to avoid a defeat in this match.
