The Indian football team has climbed into the 96th spot, and only two classifications shy of equaling the best ranking of this country in FIFA. World Champion France grab top spot deservedly.

India’s recent form has been really good, as they won three games in Hero Intercontinental Cup. The side won the tournament as well by beating Kenya in the final which was played at the Mumbai Football Arena.

This progression in the ranking was down to a new rating system of FIFA called the Elo. It basically adds or subtracts points from the existing total which is based on the result of the match. Earlier it was a system where a team’s total points were calculated by adding the average points per match.

India is tied 96th with Georgia and have a great chance to rise even higher in the rankings by performing well in the international friendlies that will be taking place in October of this year.

Coach Stephen Constantine has done a commendable job with this team, and with the AFC Asain Cup 2019 only a few months away, this boost in classification will help with the momentum of this team.

Meanwhile, FIFA World Cup 2018 winners, France have claimed the top spot in the rankings. They were deserved winners of the competition. Their opponents in the final of the tournament, Croatia have gained 16 places to climb into the fourth spot.

3rd placed team of the tournament, Belgium also gained some places and are slotted in the 2nd place ahead of Brazil.

One of the biggest losers in the rankings table were the former champions, Germany who were ousted from the tournament in the group stage itself. They fell 14 places down to the 15th place. Interestingly, the Netherlands who were unable to qualify for the World Cup, are 17th in the table, a high rank for a team that has failed to do well in the recent international competitions.
