Tottenham Hotspur has confirmed an 18 month-long loan deal for Midfielder Gedson Fernandes from Benfica on Wednesday. The player will cost £55m if Tottenham opts for the purchase clause.
Spurs are winless in the Premier League for three games now and find themselves struggling at the eighth spot with just 30 points. Injuries have left Jose Mourinho scratching his head while picking up his playing XI. The signing could give a major boost to their aspects of a top-4 finish.
As reported by Sky Sports, Chelsea and West Ham United were in the running as well for Fernandes' signature with Spurs eventually winning it. Fernandes will be donning the No.30 jersey for Spurs and could well be a fit for MousaSissouko, who will be out until April due to an injury.
The loan deal also states that it will be mandatory for Tottenham to make the deal permanent if Fernandes half of the matches played by Spurs during his loan spell.
Fernandes was out injured since the start of this season with a metatarsal fracture and has played only seven games for Benfica since his return in September. He doesn’t have numbers backing him up but his skills have been enough to tout him as one of the top emerging talents in Europe.
He will add versatility to Spurs‘ paralysed midfield that has Ndombele and Sissoko both ruled out to injury and Eric Dier to poor form. Mourinho will be allowed to fit him at whatever position he wants as the young gun is capable of operating from both the right and left side of the field. He will be a force to reckon as a holding midfielder as well.
Fans, needless to say, are buzzing at the arrival of their new signing. While some are confident and hopeful of the young star giving Tottenham a new glimpse of hope in this season while some others are just happy with the fact that they’ve had a rare new signing!
