Shubman Gill is seen as the next big thing in Indian cricket. The top order batter has an elegant cover drive and can also play the pull shot to great effect. Gill came into limelight when India won the 2018 ICC U-19 World Cup. He was the second highest run-scorer in that tournament with 418 runs at an average of 104.50 and played a big role in India’s victorious campaign. The hundred against Pakistan in the semi-final was a true indication of his enormous talent.

Shubman Gill made his first-class debut for Punjab before the U-19 World Cup. With his U-19 exploits, he was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2019 IPL season. Gill batted down the order but left a great impression with his attractive shots. He made his international debut against New Zealand in Hamilton. With India having several choices for the top order, Gill didn’t get too many games to stamp his authority.
A big chance came his way when he made his debut in the Boxing Day Test match against Australia at MCG. Against a quality bowling attack in their conditions, young Gill maintained his composure and played two important innings. Though he didn’t get a fifty, he innings which led India to a famous victory over the hosts. India later went on to win the series 2-1.
Gill has also won the BCCI awards for Best Junior Cricketer for two consecutive seasons 2013-14 and 2014-15. Along with this, he was also chosen as the Emerging Player of the tournament in 2019 IPL. With his high quality shots and bottom handed technique, his shots resemble a lot to Virat Kohli. Gill’s talent certainly makes him a player to watch out for in the future.
