He has been in the sports industry for a long time and has carried out various roles successfully. Charu Sharma himself has been inclined to sports right from his childhood. Not many would know that he was a national junior champion in diving and represented India in swimming at the Asian Games in 1982. He also qualified for the Commonwealth Games in 1978.

Charu Sharma is the son of NC Sharma, who is a former Vice-Principal of Mayo College in Ajmer, Rajasthan. He went to the same school, later to St. Stephen’s College in Delhi and completed his scholarship program at Davidson College in North Carolina. It is not known to many that before getting into the sports industry, Charu worked in a tea company for a few years and also worked with a cigarette company. He moved to Mumbai for an opportunity to work in sports and excelled as well.

Charu Sharma’s wife, Anuja Sharma, is the sister of Anand Mahindra who is the vice-chairman and managing director of Mahindra. The duo met for the first time in Mumbai. It is known that Anuja used to work with a magazine before their marriage but called it quits after marrying Charu Sharma.

Profession

Charu Sharma first bagged an opportunity to work as a commentator for a local tournament. His first big break came in 1993 when he was signed by ESPN and worked with them till 2001. He has worked as a sportscaster with several well-known Indian broadcasters such as Sony, MAX, Star Sports and Doordarshan as well. Sharma has also appeared on TV while making presentations for cricket.

As many would know, Charu Sharma has been in the cricket administrative field, as he was the CEO of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) during the inaugural edition in 2008. However, his stint did not last for long as he was removed from the position in the very next season.

He is also the director of Marshal Sports, which co-founded the Pro Kabaddi League and was the Director for the 2022 season of the same. Apart from his roles in sports, he has also worked as a quizmaster and has hosted several TV shows and events, corporate events and seminars over the years.
