Former World number 1, Deepika Kumari is a right-handed Indian archer who has made three Olympic appearances so far.
Born in Ranchi, Jharkhand to a lower-middle-class family, Deepika Kumari is an Arjuna Awardee as well as Padma Shri winner. Her father was an auto-rickshaw driver while mother worked as a nurse at Ranchi Medical College. Interestingly, in 2014, Deepika was featured by Forbes (India) as one of their ’30 under 30′.
Deepika’s early days were quite difficult as her parents had to often compromise on the family budget to financially support her dream and buy her equipment for the training. She often used homemade bamboo bows and arrows to practice archery in her early days.
The entry to Arjun Archery Academy in2005 was Deepika’s first breakthrough year. One year later in 2006, Deepika joined Tata Archery Academy in Jamshedpur to begin her professional career. Here, she got proper equipment as well as a uniform along with Rs 500 stipend to pursue her dream.
