Born on 13 June 1994 in Ranchi, Jharkhand to a lower-middle-class family, Deepika Kumari is an Arjuna Awardee as well as Padma Shri winner. Her father was an auto-rickshaw driver while mother worked as a nurse at Ranchi Medical College. Interestingly, in 2014, Deepika was featured by Forbes (India) as one of their ’30 under 30′.

Deepika’s early days were quite difficult as her parents had to often compromise on the family budget to financially support her dream and buy her equipment for the training. She often used homemade bamboo bows and arrows to practice archery in her early days.

First breakthrough

The entry to Arjun Archery Academy in2005 was Deepika’s first breakthrough year. One year later in 2006, Deepika joined Tata Archery Academy in Jamshedpur to begin her professional career. Here, she got proper equipment as well as a uniform along with Rs 500 stipend to pursue her dream.

Junior Level-

  • 2006 Archery World Cup in Mérida Title Win – The second Indian to win the title after Palton Hansda
  • Cadet World Championship Title – November 2009
  • In 2009, Deepika won the 11th Youth World Archery Championship held in Ogden. She also won a gold medal in the same competition in the women’s team recurve event

Commonwealth Games

  • Two gold medals – one in the individual event and the other in the women’s team recurve event
  • She also received the Outstanding Performance at CWG (Female) Award at the 2010 Sahara Sports Awards ceremony for her

World Cup:

  • Deepika won her first World Cup individual stage recurve gold medal at Antalya In May 2012
  • On 22 July 2013, Deepika won the Gold Medal in Archery World Cup stage 3 held at Medellin
  • Deepika also won a Silver Medal in 2013 FITA Archery World Cup
  • In 2015, she won a bronze in the individual event at the World Championships in Copenhagen

Asian Championship-

  • She won a bronze medal in the Asian Championships in November 2015 with Jayanta Talukdar in the Recurve Mixed Team event.

World Number 1 Ranking

  • In 2012, Deepika became the world no. 1 in Women’s Recurve Archery
