England cricketer Olly Stone played his debut first-class match back in 2012. It has been 8 years since and Stone has only managed to feature in 39 first-class matches and 30 List-A games. One wonders what could be the reason for that.

Stone, early in his career, was remarked as one for the future, purely because of his ability to bowl consistently at 145 kmph. However, Olly Stone has only managed to play 2 Tests and 4 ODIs so far in his international cricket career. Unfortunately, injuries at regular intervals never allowed him to prosper in his career. The 27-year-old England fast bowler, though, is still considered as one important commodity in the England fast bowling department. Olly Stone recently impressed with his sheer pace and accuracy in the second Test against India on a surface that had nothing much for the seamers.

Olly Stone is a product of Northamptonshire Cricket Academy. He made his debut for Northamptonshire in a T20 game against Durham in the Friends Provident T20. He, however, played his debut first-class match against Yorkshire in the County Championship. His List-A debut came against Warwickshire.

He immediately impressed with his fast bowling and played throughout the 2012 season and consequently signed a two-year deal with the club in July. His race-pace impressed the selectors and he earned a call-up in England’s under-19 side for the tour to South Africa in 2013. On the tour, he made heads turn after claiming the best figures in the history of England’s under-19 team, taking 11 for 79.

He made rapid strides and during the 2014-15season, he topped the county championship averages. He was no doubt on the radar of the selectors but then suffered a setback in the form of a stress fracture injury. The injury also meant that he was ruled out of the England Performance Programme development camp in 2015.

Regular injuries didn’t help his cause as his first-class appearances also became less as time went by. While celebrating the wicket of Moeen Ali, he suffered a knee injury in 2016 that ruled him out of the 2016 county season as well.

Despite staying out for the whole season, Olly Stone found a new team in Warwickshire in 2016. He wreaked havoc in 2018 and grabbed eyeballs. Turning up for Warwickshire, he picked up 43 wickets in just 12 matches at an astonishing average of 12. 20. Impressive performances at the domestic circuit finally helped him earn an international call-up for the Sri Lanka tour in 2018. Olly Stone made his one-day international debut against Sri Lanka on 10th October 2018.

He was also picked for the Test series against West Indies later in December. But, as fate would have it, Stone suffered another setback in the form of a back injury and the 27-year-old was ruled out of the tour. His debut Test came against Ireland in July 2019 in the one-off Test at Lord’s. Given his ability to hit 140 clicks consistently, Olly Stone has to potential to become a regular for England across formats. Nevertheless, only time will tell how far could he go in his international cricket career.
