Career

Sanket Sargar came into limelight after he lifted a record weight of 139 kg at the Khelo India University Games. Participating in his first Commonwealth Games, Sargar was the main attraction when he lifted a total of 242 kg (108 kg in snatch and 135 kg in clean and jerk) and was leading the podium until Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq lifted 143 kg.

Sanket was unfortunate to have missed out on the Gold at the Birmingham Games as he got injured while lifting 138 kg in the clean and jerk. A narrow margin of 1 kg difference saw the 21-year-old miss out on the Gold.

Sargar started his career in 2013, taking inspiration from his family in Sangli. His sister is also a weightlifter as Sanket roused to prominence in the district and state level competitions before he made his name at the national level.

Sanket Sargar smashed the Commonwealth and the National record to secure a gold medal in the men’s 55 kg category in the Singapore Weightlifting International in 2021.

Interestingly after winning the Silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, WWE superstar John Cena posted a picture of Sargar. Virat Kohli is the only other personality to feature on the US wrestler’s Instagram account.
