The reigning champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, have received a major boost as their English opener Phil Salt is set to board a flight back to India later this week. The wicketkeeper batter was sidelined for a month due to a finger injury on his left hand while diving to save a boundary in the game against the Delhi Capitals on April 18 in Bengaluru. Since then, Salt hasn’t featured for the reigning champions this season, and he flew back home to get the scans done.
In his absence, RCB had to rely on young left-hand batter Jacob Bethell, who opened the innings along with Virat Kohli. The duo of Kohli and Bethell couldn’t replicate the magic Kohli and Salt are known for, and they lacked the firepower at the top.

In Salt’s absence, RCB had to compromise with their first-choice opening duo of Phil Salt and Virat Kohli. In his absence, the Royal Challengers qualified for the playoffs and secured a spot among the top two teams this season, but they lacked spark at the top order with Bethell.
Before taking his brief break, Phil Salt was in absolutely blistering form for Bengaluru. Known for his fearless approach right from the very first ball, the English wicketkeeper-batsman has given RCB exactly what they have lacked in previous seasons—sheer, unadulterated power powerplay intent.
In the modern IPL, maximizing the first six overs is often the difference between a winning total and a below-par score. Salt’s ability to take down both high-quality pace and spin early in the innings has taken immense pressure off his batting partners. His aggressive style means that even if a couple of early wickets fall, the run rate stays healthy, allowing the middle-order power hitters to construct the back half of the innings comfortably.
The timing of Salt’s return couldn’t possibly be better for the Royal Challengers. RCB, already in the playoffs, would want Salt operating as soon as possible as the tournament enters its business end.
RCB has a crucial string of upcoming matches later this week and early next week. Having their premier overseas opener back in the mix allows the captain and coach to field their strongest possible playing XI.
According to team sources, Salt is expected to land in India within the next 48 hours. Once he arrives, he will link up with the squad immediately, undergo routine fitness assessments, and head straight into the nets. Given his natural fitness and match-readiness, the management is highly optimistic about slotting him right back into the starting lineup for their very next game.
If you’re an RCB supporter, you know the passion is always at an all-time high. Social media is already buzzing with fans counting down the days until they see the Englishman charging down the wicket again. Having secured that playoff spot and chasing the ultimate dream of winning the trophy two years in a row, getting Phil Salt back right now is the ultimate shot of adrenaline. Opposing teams better redraw their bowling charts because RCB’s batting lineup is about to get its explosive edge back.
